Project Purpose

The course development module provided an opportunity to create a short educational module using a course authoring tool, which I chose Rise 360 to create a module titled Email Etiquette 101. The goal was to ensure that the module contained features that would be interactive, accessible, and provide learners with feedback.

Skills Demonstrated

Creating the Email Etiquette 101 module required identifying a specific need, which I identified as teaching learners the importance of professional email communication in academic settings. This lead to creating a strong learning objective that had actionable language that would be used to structure the course, ensuring that at the end of the course learners are able to meet the course learning outcome set by the learning objective. Using an authoring tool like Rise 360 required understanding how to create this learning module from scratch and embedding interactive elements  that make the course accessible, interactive, and data driven. As the instructional designer I needed to view the module from the perspective of a designer and a student to ensure that each element built upon each other, to prepare the student for the final assessment to check for understanding.

Impact

The design of the Email Etiquette 101 module was structured in a way that learners are able to engage with the content in meaningful ways such as showing an example of a properly written email to a professor that has each part of the email labeled allowing learners to be able to interact with the email by clicking on each section to learn more about what information should be included in a professional email. An interactive scenario focused on an academic related topic that students will encounter in college was designed to provide learners with immediate feedback as to why a choice is correct or incorrect. Depending on the choice, the learner would need to attempt the scenario again which helps with information retention. Each section of the module contains audio descriptions with accompanying transcripts to help learners that may be hard of hearing access the information as well as those that may need information repeated more than once. The structure of the module was created with user experience in mind to ensure accessibility and learners being able to achieve course mastery.
